Ansa Assuncao LLP Obtains Defense Verdict in Toledo, Ohio
Trial team Steve McLaughlin, Tom O’Connor, Stephanie Bashar, Joan Ruszkowski, and Hilda Diaz achieved a defense verdict on behalf of an international insurance company on July 15, 2011. The plaintiff policy holder asserted that the insurance company had handled its claim in bad faith, and it sought to recover more than $8 million in business income, property, and punitive damages. The jury trial occurred in the United States District Court for the Northern District of Ohio.

Ansa Assuncao LLP Prevails before the United States Supreme Court in Landmark Personal Jurisdiction Case
On June 27, 2011, the United States Supreme Court issued its decision in J. McIntyre Machinery Ltd. v. Nicastro. An Ansa Assuncao team from New Jersey and Baltimore secured an important victory in a case that for the first time in 24 years brought before the Court the contours of the defendant's liberty right to be free from personal jurisdiction in a state where the defendant had no deliberate contacts. Arthur Fergenson argues J. McIntyre Machinery Ltd. v. Nicastro before the Supreme Court
On January 11, 2011, the United States Supreme Court heard oral argument in J. McIntyre Machinery Ltd. v. Nicastro. An Ansa Assuncao team from New Jersey and Baltimore obtained certiorari in a case that for the first time in 24 years brought before the Court the contours of the defendant's liberty right to be free from personal jurisdiction in a state where the defendant had no deliberate contacts. Recognizing the importance of this case to the business community, DRI has set aside an hour and a half for a webcast in which Ansa Assuncao's Arthur Fergenson, who argued the case before the Supreme Court, will offer his insights on what corporations can do to protect against and combat unfair assertions of jurisdiction.
